(Santo Domingo) Annabelle Chukwu scored twice in extra time as Canada beat Costa Rica 5-3 on Sunday in the Concacaf Under-20 Championship third-place game.
The win secured Canada’s entry into the FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup.
Kayla Briggs took the ball away from Costa Rican Ella Ottey and delivered a perfect cross to Chukwu in the 101st minute. Chukwu entered the game early in the second half.
The 16-year-old Ottawan added an insurance goal in the 121st minute, curling in a shot that beat goaltender Genesis Perez.
In the tournament final, the Mexicans defeated the defending champions of the United States 2-1. Fatima Servin broke the deadlock in the 88th minute, but that didn’t change anything for the two teams, who had already secured their World Cup tickets.
The two finalists and the squad that took third place in this eight-team Concacaf tournament will represent North America, Central America and the Caribbean at the FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup years.
Trailing 3-2 in the second half, Canada forced extra time when Olivia Smith tied the game following a low cross from Briggs.
