Burglary: the mistake to avoid with your keys

Home burglary is the fear of many French people. However, certain everyday behaviors put us in danger without our even realizing it. It must be said that the thugs will stop at nothing to orchestrate their bad move.

Especially since the “high season” for burglaries is fast approaching: with summer, the holiday season is when the most home thefts are reported.

According to the Observatoire de la sécurité des foyers, in France, 30% of home thefts take place in July, August and December. It is therefore better to be extra vigilant… And to review some of our habits.

The scenario is classic in many homes; when we get home in the evening, we often get into the habit, which is certainly welcome, of double-closing our front door… Leaving the keys warm in the lock, however. Many believe that this will thwart the plans of certain burglars, by “obstructing” the opening, thus protecting it against the intrustion of any tools.

But that’s a bad idea, Health reports.

According to the media, “it is much easier to break into a home when the key is still in the lock”. Why ?

Thieves can thus use a hook, and turn the lock from the other side of the door.

Another technique: they can, by means of a simple iron wire, drop the key, and recover it under the door, if the opening between the frame and the ground is wide enough.

So be sure not to leave your keychain hanging on the door, and store it safely in your home. On the other hand, it is of course always advisable to close your lock with a double turn, whether you are at home or on the move.

In the same way, it is important to equip yourself with a door that is strong enough and equipped with tough locks to avoid break-ins of all kinds.
