(Atlanta) After being acquired last week from the San Diego Padres, first baseman Matt Carpenter has been released by the Atlanta Braves.

It’s a move that costs the Braves $4 million, who got Carpenter along with left-hander Ray Keer on Friday in exchange for outfielder Drew Campbell. In this transaction, the Padres retained $1.5 million of Carpenter’s $5.5 million salary for 2024.

The three-time All-Star with the St. Louis Cardinals reignited his career with the New York Yankees in 2022, hitting .305 with 15 home runs and 37 RBIs. The 38-year-old baseball player played in New York from May 26 to August 8, when he fractured his left foot on a foul ball. He returned to the game for the playoffs.

He subsequently signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Padres, which included a $5.5 million player-discretionary option for 2024.
