Renowned Apollo 8 astronaut, Bill Anders, known for capturing the iconic “Earthrise” photograph in space, tragically lost his life in a plane crash at the age of 90. The incident occurred when the small aircraft he was piloting crashed into the sea off the coast of Washington state. His son, Greg, confirmed the devastating news of his father’s passing.

Anders, who played a pivotal role as the lunar module pilot during the Apollo 8 mission, took the captivating Earthrise photo during the historic 1968 mission. This image, showing the Earth rising above the lunar horizon, is hailed as one of the most powerful and influential pictures of our planet from space. Anders regarded this photograph as his most significant contribution to the space exploration program.

The Earthrise image is credited with sparking the global environmental movement and was instrumental in the establishment of Earth Day, an annual event dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and activism. Reflecting on the profound moment, Anders remarked, “We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing that we discovered was the Earth.”

The tragic plane crash that claimed Anders’ life occurred off Jones Island, with witnesses recounting the harrowing sight of the aircraft plunging into the water and erupting into flames. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that Anders was flying a Beechcraft A A 45, also known as a T-34, at the time of the crash.

In addition to his remarkable contributions to space exploration, Anders also served as the backup pilot for the Apollo 11 mission that culminated in the first Moon landing in 1969. Following his retirement from the space program, he continued to work in the aerospace industry and briefly served as the US Ambassador to Norway in the 1970s.

Bill Nelson, the Nasa Administrator, paid tribute to Anders, acknowledging his profound impact on humanity through his work on the Apollo 8 mission. Fellow astronauts, including Buzz Aldrin and Senator Mark Kelly, also expressed their condolences and highlighted Anders’ enduring legacy as an inspiration to future generations of explorers.

The tragic loss of Bill Anders serves as a somber reminder of the risks and sacrifices associated with space exploration, while also celebrating his indelible contributions to our understanding of the cosmos and our planet Earth.
