(Baku) The first part of qualifying (Q1) for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Formula 1 was again temporarily interrupted on Friday after an accident for Frenchman Pierre Gasly (Alpine), on the urban track of Baku.

The Norman driver damaged the right side of his car by hitting a wall, where the Dutchman Nyck de Vries (Alpha Tauri), crashed a few moments earlier, causing a first session interruption.

Both pilots escaped unscathed.

The session resumed ten minutes later, time to remove the Alpine and clean the track.

This weekend, the fourth round of the season marks the return of a sprint race on Saturday, a format inaugurated in 2021.

With the sprint races, the qualifications are brought forward to Friday, with a novelty this year since they will determine the starting grid for the GP on Sunday.

Saturday will be dedicated to the sprint. The drivers will take to the track for a second qualifying session on the same model as that of Friday but shorter, which will determine the starting order for the sprint race contested on the same day.
