Journalist Mayssa Ferah, from the daily La Presse, and host Stéphan Bureau are among the big winners of the first In the Media Awards.

Reporter assigned to criminal and police affairs, Mayssa Ferah dominated the Relève category for her work and the “humanity” that emanates from it, explained host Marie-Louise Arsenault during the program broadcast Wednesday evening on Télé-Québec .

This special event aimed to highlight the work of Quebec media artists and artisans over the past few months.

For his part, Stéphan Bureau was crowned media personality of the year. In an interview with Marie-Louise Arsenault, the host of Le Monde à l’envers admitted that he was not “crazy” to obtain such a reward. “Our job is not to be the center of attention,” said the TVA headliner.

Invited to compare TVA and Radio-Canada, Stéphan Bureau indicated that TVA had a strong DNA “which we understand quite quickly and which is not necessarily [that of Radio-Canada”.

The host acknowledged that he did not have complete freedom in the Upside Down World, a program in which the big boss of Quebecor, Pierre Karl Péladeau, was very involved. Could he invite Julie Snyder, the businessman’s ex-wife? It’s a battle he doesn’t want to fight “for obvious reasons,” the interviewee replied. “Did we think about it this year? Obviously. […] But I think it would have been clumsy,” added Stéphan Bureau.

As La Presse reported last year, Le monde à l’envers was due to air on TVA in the spring of 2022, confirmed Stéphan Bureau. But because the team was “not happy,” the network pushed back its launch for a few months.

Will TVA grant a second season to the television show, which attracts between 500,000 and 600,000 live viewers every Friday evening? The host claimed he was unaware of the answer.

The awards were split among various media groups.

The prize for international reporting was awarded to Noovo Info journalist Louis-Philippe Bourdeau, for his work in the war zone in Ukraine.

The prize for journalistic investigation was awarded to Brigitte Noël and Pasquale Turbide, of Radio-Canada, for their report on the Robert Miller affair, presented in the program Enquête on ICI Télé.

The award for media slippage was given to CAQ minister Jean Boulet for his erroneous statements on immigration. Angie Augustin, aka Citron Rose, was named content creator of the year, and Ivanoh Demers, photographer of the year.

The winners were determined by the team of collaborators of the show Dans les media, made up of Vanessa Destiné, Arnaud Granata, Philippe Léger and Monic Néron.

As for the public award of the three topics that would have taken up too much space in the media space according to a Leger poll, the pandemic came in first, Harry and Meghan second, then Ukraine third.

In the media will be back in September for a seventh season, announced Marie-Louise Arsenault at the end of the show.
