(Melbourne) Ontario’s Carol Zhao advanced to the next round of Australian Open qualifying on Monday, winning 6-3, 7-6 (7) against Valeria Savinykh of Russia.

Zhao won in one hour 55 minutes. She hit 14 winners, compared to 22 unforced errors.

The Ontarian committed four double faults. Savinykh hit 29 winners and 48 unforced errors.

Zhao broke his opponent seven times, while Savinykh did so on three occasions.

Montrealer Gabriel Diallo prevailed 7-6 (3), 6-1 against Pablo Llamas Ruiz of Spain.

Toronto’s Katherine Sebov got the better of Colombia’s Emiliana Arango 6-4, 6-4.

Canadian Stacey Fung was eliminated 6-1, 6-4 by Julia Riera of Argentina.

Riera finished the match with two aces and two double faults.

For her part, the Vancouver player did not make an ace or a double fault.

Riera committed 30 unforced errors, five more than her opponent.

Rebecca Marino, also of Vancouver, will play against Ya Yi Yang of Taiwan.
