Auctioned by more than 200,000 euros in a joint letter from Gauguin and Van Gogh

A joint letter sent in November of 1888 by Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin to your friend Émile Bernard , in which both painters thought about their art and about themselves, was auctioned Tuesday in Paris by 210.600 euros.

The letter was signed in the French town of Arles by Van Gogh (1853-1890) and Gauguin (1848-1903) and according to the auction house Drouot, which held the sale, allows you to discover how much they admired and influenced each other, despite having different styles.

“This document reflects the immense lucidity of these artists in regard to the change that happens around them: they are fully aware that his art marks a point of inflection and that can only be understood by future generations,” adds Drouot in its press release.

In total, there are four manuscript pages , in which Van Gogh tells for example the also painter Bernard his interest in Gauguin or their joint visits to the brothels, which are reflected in his paintings: “it Is likely that we go to work often there,” she says.

in spite of its fragility, Drouot considers that this letter is “ exceptional ” not only by bringing together “two huge painters”, who had met for the first time in Paris two years before, but also by his conviction that his painting “was going to revolutionize the art of the following generations”.
