(Paris) Batswana Nijel Amos, Olympic vice-champion in the 800m in 2012, has been suspended for three years for doping with a metabolic modulator, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Wednesday.
Amos (29) tested positive on June 4, 2022 for “metabolites of GW1516” in an out-of-competition test, and was provisionally suspended in July, just before the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
He is deprived of competition until July 2025 and will therefore miss the Paris Olympics in 2024, where he could claim a fourth participation in the event.
Amos is the third all-time performer on the double lap. He had run in 1 min 41 sec 73 in the 2012 London Olympics where he won silver behind Kenyan world record holder David Rudisha.
