Ash Barty moves to Wimbledon quarterfinals

Ash Barty, who is ranked #1 in the world, reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals by defeating Barbora Krejcikova (7-5, 6-3 Monday).

Barty struggled with her serve, but she saved eight of the 10 break points. Barty won the 2019 French Open Grand Slam title, but she was also the Wimbledon girls singles champion in 2011.

Ons Jabeur, Tunisia’s first Arab woman, reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals after she defeated 2020 French Open champion Iga Swaitek 5-7-6-1, 6-1. Jabeur, who was seeded 21st in the tournament, converted all seven break point opportunities.

No. Aryna Sabalenka, 2nd seed, reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinals by defeating Elena Rybakina, 6-3, 6-8, 6-3. No. No. 8 Karolina Pliskova won 10 aces, and Liudmila Samsonova was eliminated 6-2, 3-3.

No. 7 Matteo Berrettini defeated Ilya Ivashka, 6-4,6-3, 6-1, to become the first Italian man to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 23 years.

The schedule included all 16 matches in the fourth round for both men and women to begin the second week of the tournament. Centre Court was home to the No. 1 Novak Djokovic and eight-time champion Roger Federer were among those who took Centre Court. There were many new faces on the day’s schedule. There were 32 singles players left in the brackets. Twenty-six had never reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, and twenty were playing in the fourth round.
