Arrival of a cold drop tomorrow: which departments are affected?

While the temperatures at the beginning of the week were favourable, especially in the north of France, a wave of freshness is approaching France. This Wednesday, April 19, 2023, it was 17 degrees in Lille or 20 degrees in Paris. Despite this passage of good temperatures, a great contrast will take place for the day of this Friday, April 21. The northern half of France (up to above the Loire) will see its temperatures drop considerably, below seasonal norms. On the other hand, the south of the country will however experience a rise in temperatures, especially in Aquitaine.

This Friday 21 and Saturday 22 April 2023 will be marked by considerable temperature differences, following this cold current from Belgium. A difference reaching 15 degrees between the north and the south of the country will be observed, to end in thunderstorms. The Weather Channel confirms this trend: “The days of Thursday and Friday will be characterized by this large north-south gap with very opposite feelings”. During these two days, we will therefore live to the rhythm of the four seasons throughout the country. For example, it will be 9 degrees maximum in Lille while 24 degrees will be felt in Bordeaux.

You are probably wondering what this famous “cold drop” is. “A cold drop is a pocket of very cold air located at an altitude of more than 5,000 m. When the polar jet stream deforms, a pocket may break off to descend to our latitudes, the ‘we call it a cold drop’, as Météo-France indicates. This is unfortunately what will happen from this Thursday, April 20. Finally, thunderstorms and showers are expected in the north of the country for this Saturday, April 22.

Find out in our slideshow below, if your department is affected by this “drop of cold” which will affect our country this Saturday, April 21, 2023.
