An emblematic figure of the New Wave, actress Anna Karina tragically died on December 14, 2019 at the age of 79. The muse and ex-wife of director Jean-Claude Godard had shot in the film A woman is a woman for which she won the Silver Bear for best actress in 1961.

Her last husband, the director and Franco-American actor Dennis Berry had made a point after his disappearance, in particular to dispute the rumors of cancer which have emerged about his wife. The latter did not die of the disease but following a complicated operation. This is what he revealed via a press release relayed by journalist Jean-François Guyot on Twitter. “We had to take her urgently to intensive care following a post-operative complication. There everything changed… Anna left us on Saturday, at 2.38 p.m. After the operation, she was to be released the next day,” said he said and added: “The doctor was delighted to meet her by chance by my side walking in the courtyard of the hospital. Unfortunately, a muscle rupture forced the professor to operate on her again. It was planned that “She still has many good years ahead of her. Alas, her body did not resist. This death is in no way due to cancer.”

His funeral took place on December 21, 2013 at the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris in the presence of many personalities including Marion Cotillard, Macha Méril, Léa Seydoux, Jane Birkin and Clovis Cornillac.
