Amtrak Halts Chicago Area Trains Due to Extreme Cold
Amtrak has made the decision to cancel several trains that either begin or end in Chicago as a result of an impending cold front.
The cancellation affects the Empire Builder train, which was set to depart from Chicago on Monday for a journey to the Pacific Northwest. Additionally, the Empire Builder train originating in Spokane and heading towards Chicago will also not run.
Impact on Travelers and Regions
The Empire Builder line, which starts in Chicago and passes through multiple states before reaching the Pacific Northwest, will be affected by the cold temperatures expected in the region. The path includes stops in Wisconsin, St. Paul, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, and Idaho.
The National Weather Service has forecasted extremely frigid conditions for Sunday through Tuesday, with Monday being the most severe. Wind chills in Chicago could plummet to minus-30 degrees overnight, with temperatures dipping below zero on Sunday and Monday nights.
Even colder temperatures are predicted along the train’s route, particularly in Fargo, North Dakota, where temperatures could reach minus-20 degrees with wind chills as low as 40-to-50 degrees below zero.
Reasons Behind the Cancellations
Amtrak’s decision to cancel the Empire Builder trains is primarily due to the impact of cold weather on the switches that enable trains to transition between tracks during their journey. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety and efficiency of railway operations.
Alternative Travel Options
For passengers needing to travel to Minneapolis, the Borealis train connecting Chicago and Minneapolis is still scheduled to operate on Monday despite the cancellations affecting other lines.
While the Empire Builder trains are affected, other services like the City of New Orleans, the Saluki, the Illini, the Lincoln service, and the Texas Eagle are currently set to continue operating as usual.
Amtrak’s decision to cancel these trains underscores the importance of prioritizing passenger safety and operational efficiency in the face of extreme weather conditions. Travelers are advised to stay updated on any further developments or changes to their travel plans.
