A French woman confesses that she cannot pronounce her boyfriend’s name. For about six months she has completely avoided calling him by name.

A young woman from France has admitted that she cannot pronounce her boyfriend’s name correctly. As she writes on the social media platform Reddit, she has avoided calling him by name for the past six months because she has difficulty pronouncing the ‘R’ in his name correctly.

This is a name that is quite common in both English and Spanish. The woman confessed that she worries about mispronouncing his name and disappointing him. In her post, she goes on to describe how she now finds herself in the awkward position of how to broach the subject with her boyfriend after already dating him for six months.

The Frenchwoman complains on Reddit: “I just can’t roll my Rs the way he and his friends roll their Rs when they say his name. I don’t want to say his name in English because he prefers it when people use the Spanish pronunciation, but I’m so afraid of messing it up and disappointing him that I’d rather not say it. I think he’s starting to notice because he asked me when was the last time I called him by his name.”

Instead of confessing the truth, she lied to him and claimed that she started calling him by his name early in their relationship but switched to pet names as she became more comfortable with him.

Seeking advice on how to handle the situation, she added: “The truth is, if I had called him by his name at the beginning, he could have corrected me and I could have practiced with him instead of practicing alone. I’m too far into the relationship to mispronounce his name right now and I can’t get out of this situation.”

Reddit users advised her to tell the truth and try rolling the ‘R’s. Many used their own experiences to encourage them and point out that it would probably end up being a funny anecdote.

One user writes: “My husband and I have been together for 20 years and my middle name is Lebanese. It has an R that needs to be rolled really hard. He can’t do it. He was never able to pronounce my middle name and let me tell you, it never bothered me. I think it’s cute and funny. […] One day you will most likely laugh about it.”

The woman doesn’t reveal what the friend’s name is. While the young French woman seeks advice online, childless couples are bragging about their lives of luxury on social media. They do this for a very specific reason: “Because we can”.
