After a second consecutive five-win season, Derrin Hansen was fired as Omaha’s coach.
Hansen was a Mavericks staff member since 1998, and was the head coach for 17 seasons. Hansen’s record was 253-260, 92-122 for the program since it became a full Division I member of 2015
This season, the Mavericks finished 5-25 overall and 4-14 during Summit League play. In the first round, they lost 87 to 79 to South Dakota State.
Adrian Dowell, athletic director of Mavericks, said that Coach Hansen has made many significant contributions to Omaha Athletics. “Coach Hansen was a great leader of Omaha Men’s Basketball for 17 years. He impacted many lives by his mentorship of student athletes on the court and helped the program transition to Division I.
In 2017, the Mavericks reached Summit League Tournament final and were just a few points away from the NCAA Tournament. In 2019, they returned to the Summit final.
The Mavericks numbered a total of 10-45 in the Summit League’s last two years and 7-25 in the Summit League.
Dowell stated, “After careful evaluation of the program, i am confident that Omaha Basketball can achieve sustained success at the top league,” Dowell added.
