(Adelaide) The Czech Barbora Krejcikova, a former French Open tennis champion, and the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia suffered elimination in the first round of the Adelaide International Tennis Tournament on Monday.

Anna Kalinskaya, a player from qualifying, beat Krejcikova, the fourth seed and 2021 French Open winner, in three sets of 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

Kalinskaya gave herself three match points on Krejcikova’s serve in the 12th game of the deciding set and converted the third for the victory.

Furthermore, Haddad Maia, fifth seed, lost in two sets of 6-3, 6-4, against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, also from qualifying.

Kazakh Elena Rybakina, champion of the Brisbane International Tournament on Sunday, and American Jessica Pegula are the first two seeds in the tournament. Neither played on Monday.

Among the men, the American Tommy Paul is the favorite for the tournament.

No Canadians are participating in the tournament.
