Ten questions for… José Boisjoli | “The word “impossible” is not part of my vocabulary.”

Impossible. We have a culture at BRP where we get things done, we are there to find solutions. I think we’re good at innovating, not just with our products, but our ways of doing things. The word “impossible” is not in my vocabulary.

Take time to celebrate successes. I don’t do it enough and we don’t do it enough. I like discreet [low profile] people. It influences me in the way I do things. It’s something that we could do a little more, to celebrate or celebrate our successes a little more.

By being active. You will find this funny, but the best times I get off the hook are while rolling our products. When you’re snowmobiling or boating, you have to be in the present moment. This allows me to combine business with pleasure. This is how I am able to unplug.

I have two. The first is a trophy for the stock market entry of the year in 2013. The second is a pitcher of water that my father had on his desk. He was a businessman in the Eastern Townships. He died at the age of 55. When we closed his office, I took the tray and the pitcher of water. I see him every morning and think of him often.

To have closed the Evinrude brand (outboard motors) in 2020. We purchased Evinrude in 2001. Its situation was much more complicated than the assessment of our prior verification. Over the 19 years we’ve owned the brand, we’ve come up with different strategies, which obviously haven’t worked. In spring 2020, we made the difficult decision to stop and that, for me, was a big disappointment.

Someone who listens, who is able to stay close to people and who people turn to. This is what I call a local leader. He is someone who listens, consults and asks the right questions to the right people and to whom people are not afraid to offer their point of view. He is also someone who makes decisions.

BRP. In 2003, when we became an independent company, the new owners offered us, the 26 vice-presidents, the opportunity to buy BRP shares with our own money. Everyone participated. We believed in our plan. This has been my best investment so far. We worked hard, but we were rewarded.

For me, it’s very simple: be sincere with the right words. Be true. I don’t like thank you notes that are already prepared. It doesn’t feel true.

I will listen and consult people. When it’s simple, I decide pretty quickly, but when it’s more complex, I take a few days and sleep on it. In the morning, I exercise. During this hour, I reflect, and usually, this is when the planets align.

I’m going to answer as if François Pérusse asked me: ishhh [laughs]. Finally, I talked to several of our engineers, and yes, you can leave your Ski-Doo in the yard. It is designed to start even in winter in a yard.
