Even though the number of mining incidents is low in Quebec, all underground mines must have a mine rescue team. The number of lifeguards depends on the number of employees. For example, six lifeguards are required for a mine with 50 or fewer employees, and 21 are required for a mine with 250 or more employees.

Those who wish to take on this role do so on a voluntary basis and they can come from all walks of life: mechanic, electrician, nurse, operator, etc. “Having a multidisciplinary team is a guarantee of success because it will be ready to resolve any situation,” explains Jean Proulx, head of the Mining Rescue Service at the Commission for Standards and Equity. , occupational health and safety (CNESST).

However, don’t become a lifeguard who wants to, because you have to go through an arduous selection process. “It is the CNESST which is responsible for continuing training. Initially, volunteers must prove their abilities over three days through different tests. Then, every two months, there is continuing education. It’s an extremely standardized process for the twenty or so active mines,” explains Jean Proulx.

On the program, rescue methods in the event of fire or release of harmful gases, maneuvers when visibility is zero, resumption of mining activities after a critical event, etc. “There are candidates who realize that they are unable to carry out the protocols due to the respiratory system or because they do not feel comfortable with the reduced visibility due to a fire . »

Every fall, a CNESST manager visits the different mines and, using a scorecard, evaluates the performance of the team of rescuers.

When the holidays return, the six best teams will be invited to participate in the provincial competition. “This year, it’s exceptional since we invite everyone who wishes to participate. Currently, 14 teams will be present next spring,” explains Jean Proulx.

On the big day, the selected teams perform their know-how through six microsimulations which cover the four main themes taught during the training. The judges ? Peers who are in the field. “For the teams, yes, there is a question of honor, but for us, it is also a way of validating our lessons and measuring the quality of the training. Yes, the equipment and tools evolve, but the rescue principles remain the same. So it’s a way of reframing ourselves. »

The winning team will have the chance to compete against the best rescue teams in the world. The competition is tough and countries like Poland are difficult to dislodge. The next edition will take place in Colombia in September 2024.
