Toronto Blue Jays | General manager Ross Atkins will return

(Toronto) Toronto Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro gave general manager Ross Atkins a vote of confidence Thursday, saying he will be back next season.

Atkins’ status was raised in the opening moments of Shapiro’s season-ending press conference, which continued for about 30 minutes at the Rogers Centre.

“When you analyze something, you don’t analyze just one show or even just one season,” Shapiro said. In the case of Ross, his accomplishments – in my opinion – are beyond doubt. »

The Torontonians were eliminated by the Minnesota Twins in a series between drafted teams from the American League last week. It was the third time in four years that the Blue Jays were swept in the first round.

The Blue Jays only scored one run in two games against the Twins.

After the Jays’ elimination, many questioned manager John Schneider’s decision to remove starter Jose Berrios from the mound in the fourth inning of Game 2 despite the fact that the right-hander seemed in full control of his skills.

The Canadian team qualified for the playoffs on the penultimate day of the regular schedule. The Blue Jays were the sixth seed in the American, having acquired the third and final bye awarded to drafted teams.

Atkins has held his position with the Blue Jays for nearly eight years.

He led the Blue Jays to the AL Championship Series in 2016, before beginning a rebuild that continued through the conclusion of the 2019 campaign.

Toronto made the playoffs during the coronavirus pandemic-shortened season in 2020.

The Blue Jays have lost their last seven playoff games, a streak dating back to the 2016 AL Championship Series. They haven’t won the World Series since 1993.
