(Ningbo) The Canadian women’s volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-17) victory over Mexico on Saturday, but failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris of 2024.

The Canadian attack was led by Kiera Van Ryk (17 points), Alexa Gray (13), Hilary Howe (12) and Emily Maglio (11).

With this victory, Canada improved its record to 4-2, but it was not enough to qualify for the Paris Games.

Serbia and the Dominican Republic, both 5-1, have all but secured the top two spots with one day remaining in the Olympic qualifying tournament.

Canada sits in fourth place in Group A with 11 points and is four points behind Serbia and the Dominican Republic.

Only the top two teams in the group qualify and Canada can only get a maximum of three points in its final match against Czechia on Sunday.

“We did what we had to do to win today against Mexico,” said Canadian coach Shannon Winzer.

“Each team has a tough schedule with seven games in nine days, but I would say this is the toughest group in these Olympic qualifiers. So, it wasn’t easy to get a three-set win today, but we managed to get the job done. Sometimes you have to be content with it. »

Serbia beat the Netherlands 3-0 on Saturday while the Dominican Republic defeated China 3-1.

The Netherlands, also at 4-2, but one point ahead of Canada, will face the Dominican Republic on Sunday.

Six teams from the qualifying tournament will join host nation France at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Five other countries can get a place next summer thanks to the world rankings. This means that Canada can still qualify for Paris with a successful season in the Volleyball Nations League.

Currently, Canada is ranked 11th in the world.
