(Montreal) The two Quebecers in action at the World Wrestling Championships were eliminated in their first fight in Belgrade, Serbia. Alex Moore lost in the under 86 kg category, while Laurence Beauregard was stopped in the under 59 kg category.

Moore wrestled Saturday in the Serbian capital, which is hosting the wrestling worlds for a second year in a row.

The Montrealer was the first to register, but his opponent Abubakr Abakarov, bronze medalist at the 2021 World Championships, was able to respond quickly to take control of the fight. The Azerbaijan representative finally won 12-2 and lost 9-6 in the next round against Frenchman Rakhim Magamadov.

For a second year in a row at the worlds and as was the case at the Tokyo Olympic Games, the American David Morris Taylor had the upper hand over the Iranian Hassan Yazdani in the grand final. He defended his world championship title with a 9-3 victory.

Yazdani, for his part, reached the 86 kg podium for a sixth time in a row at the worlds. A sequence notably punctuated by two gold medals won in 2019 and 2021.

On Monday, Quebecer Laurence Beauregard was also limited to one confrontation. The one who was participating in her second Senior World Championships faced the Indian Anjli Anjli. The latter sent Beauregard to the ground to score and subsequently consolidated her victory by technical superiority.

The final of this category was won by the Chinese Qi Zhang against the Ukrainian Yuliia Tkach.
