(Pittsburgh) The Washington Nationals offered Mike Rizzo an opportunity to finish what he started as the organization’s president of baseball operations and general manager.
The team from the American federal capital agreed to a multi-season contract extension for Rizzo on Wednesday. The deal comes as Rizzo – the architect behind the 2019 World Series – oversees the team’s complete rebuild that he believes is nearing completion.
Details of the pact have not been revealed, but the 62-year-old said he plans to stay in Washington “for a long, long time.”
The Nationals won the only championship in franchise history four years ago and immediately began a major rebuild. They notably traded Max Scherzer, Trea Turner and Juan Soto in order to expand their bank of prospects for the following seasons.
The Nationals are on pace to finish last in the National League East for the fifth straight season, but have already surpassed their 2022 season win total (55) with two weeks remaining on the schedule regular. The Nationals will enter Wednesday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at 65-80.
This contract extension comes after the team signed manager Davey Martinez to a contract that expires after the 2025 season.
