Selective Listening | Sara Dufour, Rolling Stones, Mônica Freire

We’re going to take a walk?, is the title of Sara Dufour’s new song, but also of her third album which will be released on November 3. The singer from Lac-Saint-Jean has come a long way since the release of her previous record in 2019, and has given a host of shows which led her to play with Les Cowboys Fringants this summer. Here we find the vibrant country-rock of the singer-songwriter with boundless energy, her winning collaboration with Dany Placard, her love of the great outdoors and love, and above all her joie de vivre which feels good mad. It’s clear, if there were more Sara Dufours, the world would be better off.

Is Angry a good Stones song? Rhetorical response: Angry is not a bad Stones song. To all those struggling to enjoy who ramble that the group hasn’t recorded anything memorable since Tattoo You in 1981, let’s express our gratitude to the little miracle that constitutes in 2023 the very existence of a new album by Mick, Keith and Ronnie (Hackney Diamonds, due October 20), to which must be added the miracle, not to mention the great mystery, that constitutes each heartbeat of Keith Richards, soon to be in his eighties. End of our plea: how to be angry – angry! – against a song allowing us once again to hear the inimitable backbeat – the omnipotence of simplicity – of the late Charlie Watts?

There is something new at Mônica Freire: the musician of Brazilian origin has opened the door to her Arab cultural heritage. Areia, the first extract from his album to be released in the winter, is based on the percussion of Joseph Khoury and the oud of Nazih Borish. We are far from the modernized Brazilian music that we hear on his beautiful albums Bahiatronica (2005) and Na Laje (2008), but it still promises to be just as captivating. We also find on this track the soft and charming voice of Mônica Freire, who sings more in French than usual here. We have a feeling that his next album will have what it takes to warm us in the heart of winter.
