Greater Toronto Metro Grocery Stores | Vote on a second tentative agreement

(Toronto) Workers at 27 Metro grocery stores in the Greater Toronto Area are voting Thursday afternoon on a second tentative agreement that, if ratified, will end a strike that has lasted more than a month.

The Montreal-based grocer and the Unifor bargaining committee reached an agreement on Wednesday.

The deal came a day after Metro won a temporary injunction limiting secondary pickets that were blocking fresh produce deliveries to its stores in Ontario.

More than 3,700 workers have been on strike since July 29 after rejecting the first tentative agreement, which was recommended by the bargaining committee.

They are calling for the return of their “hero’s bounty” paid during the pandemic, as well as better working conditions and more full-time jobs.

Unifor Local 414 President Gord Currie said Wednesday that the new tentative agreement recognizes the economic struggle of workers.
