It’s been five months since the season started in Major League Baseball and the 30 managers who started it are still there. It is rather rare. But the ax could fall soon.
Here are some of the managers who find themselves in peril as the season draws to a close.
This is Boone’s sixth season in New York and the first five have been very good. But the Yankees are last in the American East at 62-68 (before Monday’s games), the general manager called the campaign disastrous and it’s safe to say that patience is not the virtue that usually characterizes clubs in the Big Apple. The Yankees haven’t had a losing season since 1992.
The 67-year-old manager seemed to turn everything into gold last season leading the Mets to 101 wins before experiencing a disappointing streak, including a first-round shutout against the San Diego Padres. Another big campaign was expected after owner Steve Cohen spent heavily, but the Mets instead sank to last in the National East with a 60-71 record.
The 61-year-old manager is highly respected after taking charge of the club in 2022, leading it to 89 wins and all the way to the National Championship series. But the high payroll – with star players like Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto, Manny Machado, Yu Darvish and Xander Bogaerts – has only yielded a 60-71 record so far and the Padres will surely be out of the playoffs. .
At 37, Marmol was a surprise pick to take charge of the Cards in 2022. It seemed like a brilliant choice from senior management, however, after he led the team to a 93-game winning streak. He hasn’t been able to keep the same pace this season, with the Cards sitting last in the National Central at 56-75. They are on course to lose 90 games for the first time since 1990.
His first season was rather disappointing on the South Side, and owner Jerry Reinsdorf just fired Vice President Williams and General Manager Rick Hahn. Pitcher Keynan Middleton hasn’t been kind to the culture currently plaguing the White Sox locker room following his trade to the Yankees.
The 66-year-old manager is highly regarded, but is currently in his fifth consecutive losing season. It’s not all Black’s fault: the rebuilding of the team isn’t going well and its best players don’t seem to be able to stay healthy. It appears that the Rockies will need a new point guard, however.
Nevin replaced Joe Maddon following the latter’s dismissal midway through last campaign, but saw little more success. The Angels are one of the most baffling teams in baseball, being unable to make the playoffs even with two of the best players of their generation in Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Nevin is far from the Angels’ only problem, but it wouldn’t be surprising if they made some changes.
