(Hamilton) Even the weather couldn’t spoil the Edmonton Elks’ night yesterday.
Tre Ford threw two touchdown passes and the Elks beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24-10 for their first win of the season. The Elks, however, waited a long time to get there, as the game was interrupted for 90 minutes at the start of the second half due to a thunderstorm.
The Elks snapped a 13-game losing streak, which tied a team record. Ford earned his second career win as a CFL starter at Tim Hortons Field.
The team’s defense made seven sacks in the game.
The Elks still have a CFL-high 22-game home losing streak heading into next week’s game against the Ottawa Redblacks at Commonwealth Stadium.
The Tiger-Cats lost for the first time in seven games after a bye week. The team is also now 1-4 this season at Tim Hortons Field.
Rookie Taylor Powell completed 20 of 26 passes for 217 yards. James Butler had 115 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 possessions. Tim White had nine catches, for 101 yards.
The Tiger-Cats made it 21-10 when Marc Liegghio’s field goal, 33 yards from target, hit the post with 2:04 left in the game. It was Liegghio’s third missed field goal in the match.
Steven Dunbar Yr accepted Ford’s pass and scored the touchdown with 7:54 remaining in the second quarter, making it 21-6 for the Elks.
At halftime, the Tiger-Cats added former wide receiver Darren Flutie to their circle of honor. The latter, now 56, played 86 games with the Tiger-Cats in five seasons.
He had 405 catches for a total of 5,796 yards and 26 touchdowns. Flutie helped the team win its most recent Gray Cup championship in 1999.
