The men’s national soccer team blasted Canada Soccer on Tuesday, accusing the federation of “trying to take advantage of the Women’s World Cup” to impose an “inadequate deal”.

The National Soccer Team Players’ Association has released a statement on social media ahead of a meeting between the Canadians and Ireland at the Women’s World Cup.

Canada captain Christine Sinclair said ahead of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand that the Olympic champions wanted a tentative deal before kick-off so they could focus on soccer.

No deal was announced, but Sinclair hinted talks were mostly over and the women could focus on their mission on the ground.

This is not the case for men, however.

“Unfortunately, Canada Soccer has reduced its offers from one proposal to another despite the fact that the players have not made any additional requests”, can we read in this missive.

The men want to keep approximately 70% of the combined World Cup purse – women’s and men’s – “while simultaneously asking for common ground on a reduction in per-game compensation of up to 75%. »

“Amazingly, to date, the players of the men’s national team have not received anything for their participation in the 2022 World Cup eight months ago. »

Canada received $9 million from FIFA by virtue of its preliminary phase exit in Qatar last year. The international federation has indicated that the women’s teams will get their hands on between 1.56 million and 4.29 million, depending on their results.

The men also announced that they have sent cease and desist orders to Canada Soccer sponsors for “unauthorized use of our names, likenesses and any likenesses.” »
