Open Mubadala Citi | Injured in the knee, Denis Shapovalov withdraws

(Washington) Ontarian Denis Shapovalov said on Tuesday he withdrew from the Mubadala Citi Open in order to recover his health.

“Hi everyone, my knee needs more time to heal so unfortunately I won’t be able to play in Washington next week. I will miss the spectators at the Mubadala Citi Open, but I hope I will be able to see you on the cement soon,” he wrote on social media.

Shapovalov hasn’t played since losing in four sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 to Russia’s Roman Safiullin in the round of 16 at Wimbledon earlier this month.

The Canadian, who is ranked 22nd in the world, then seemed annoyed by a knee problem and he had difficulty finishing the last three sets. By the time he left the court after his backhand, you could see he was limping.

The question now is whether he will recover in time to compete in the men’s National Bank Open, which takes place in Toronto from August 7-13.
