Blue Jays defeated 9-1 by Padres

(Toronto) Juan Soto hit a two-run homer and a one-run double to help the San Diego Padres beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-1 on Tuesday.

Manny Machado and Gary Sanchez each hit a solo long ball in the fifth inning, helping end the Padres’ three-game losing streak (45-50). Trent Grisham added another one-run homer and Jake Cronenworth drove in a run using a double. Sanchez and Cronenworth also hit a sacrifice fly each.

“We just have to be more consistent,” Soto said. It’s been like that all season. We have games like that and then we come back on the pitch and we don’t do anything. We just have to keep the same pace every day. »

Joe Musgrove (9-2) struck out seven batters, allowing one run, five hits and one walk in six innings. Relievers Tom Cosgrove and Alek Jacob did not allow a run.

Matt Chapman was behind the Jays’ lone run with a single. They lost for the first time in five games.

Alek Manoah (2-8) allowed four runs, as many hits and five free passes in three innings, seeing his troubles continue on the mound.

It was the second start for him since a stint in the minor leagues. In the previous one, on July 7 against the Detroit Tigers, he gave up just one run in six innings to record his first victory in more than three months.

“I don’t think it’s a setback,” manager John Schneider said. The figures give the impression that his departure was worse than in reality. »

“I wish I had thrown more holds,” Manoah said. I just have to keep competing. »

Nate Pearson, Jay Jackson and Mitch White were used as relief. Pearson and White allowed a total of five runs.

Jays pitching coach Pete Walker was ejected from the game in the second inning after questioning umpire Malachi Moore’s strike zone. He was particularly heard following a ball granted to Soto, with a count of 0-2, just before the latter produced the first points of the match with his circuit.

Jose Berrios (8-6) will start for the Jays on Wednesday, opposite Yu Darvish (6-6).
