(Washington) The US Trade Representative is urging her Canadian counterpart to drop her proposed Digital Services Tax (DST) and allow US home shopping north of the border.
U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Canadian International Trade Minister Mary Ng met one-on-one in Mexico during two days of meetings in Cancún, which conclude on Friday.
This annual meeting is an opportunity for the three countries to take stock of the progress made under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
According to a U.S. account of Thursday’s meeting, Ms. Tai stressed to Mr. Ng Canada’s obligation under the agreement to license U.S. home-shopping TV channels such as QVC.
She also reiterated longstanding U.S. concerns about the digital tax, which targets foreign companies that derive revenue from Canadian user engagement, content or data.
The 3% tax would come into force in January, unless ongoing international efforts to establish a multilateral tax regime materialize by then.
