Global warming: the 14 cities that could become a “heat island”

A time bomb. Global warming is beginning to have concrete consequences in the world and France is no exception. Rising temperatures during the cold seasons, early heat waves… The situation is already critical and it will only get worse in the coming years. BFMTV had broadcast a documentary on this subject in November, entitled 2050, let’s open our eyes, focusing in particular on the rise in water levels expected in the coming decades. In this regard, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), estimates that the average level of the ocean will have risen by at least 28 centimeters in 2100, and this is the best scenario. If we do not change our habits or our greenhouse gas emissions, this rise could reach between 1 and 2 meters.

The consequences in France could be disastrous, because all the coasts will be affected and some cities could be completely wiped off the map. According to a map produced by BFMTV, flooding is expected by 2050 in several coastal departments: Loire-Atlantique, Vendée, Charente-Maritime, Seine-Maritime, Pas-de-Calais, Pyrénées-Orientales, Aude, Hérault, Bouches-du-Rhône and Southern Corsica. The floods could also be much more numerous at the level of the Seine, the Loire, the Garonne and the Rhône.

In reality, no region of France would be spared the consequences of global warming. Snow cover will decrease on the summits, forest fires will increase in the South-East as in the South-West and many cities could be flooded. This is the case of Bordeaux, Nantes, Marseille, Toulon, Nice, Brest, Le Havre and Dunkirk. Since a problem never occurs alone, a sharp rise in temperatures will have to be added to all of these consequences. According to the map unveiled by BFMTV a few months ago, several metropolises will become heat islands due to global warming. Find out which ones from the list below.
