(New York) Major League Baseball authorities have postponed games scheduled in New York and Philadelphia on Wednesday night due to poor air quality caused by smoke from raging wildfires in Canada.

A Women’s National Soccer League game in New Jersey and a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) game, scheduled to be played at an arena in Brooklyn, were also postponed due to foggy conditions that aroused the concern of the health authorities.

The New York Yankees’ game scheduled for Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox will be played Thursday in a doubleheader starting at 4:05 p.m. The game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Detroit Tigers has been postponed to Thursday, 6:05 p.m. Both clubs were originally scheduled to have Thursday off.

“These postponements were issued following conversations throughout the day with medical and meteorological experts and all relevant clubs about the clearly hazardous air quality conditions in both cities,” authorities said. Major League Baseball in a press release.

Earlier in the day, the US Weather Agency issued an air quality alert for New York City. She mentioned that the “New York State Department of Health recommends limiting strenuous physical activity outdoors to reduce the risk of adverse health effects.” In Philadelphia, the body has issued a code red.

The Yankees and White Sox played in lighter haze Tuesday night.

WNBA officials clarified that the game between the Minnesota Lynx and the New York Liberty will not take place on Wednesday, “to protect the health and safety of our fans, our teams and our community.” No recovery date has yet been announced.

In addition, the National Women’s Soccer League has postponed to August 9 the game scheduled to take place tonight against Orlando, New Jersey.
