Inflation is slowing but has not yet disappeared. The figures for May are particularly encouraging. According to provisional estimates communicated by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) on May 31, 2023, the rise in prices for the month of May should stand at 5.1% over one year.

“For the first time in a year, the annual shift in consumer prices in France, at 5.1%, is falling from its plateau which was around 6%. This decline is more marked than expected”, comments Julien Pouget , head of the business cycle department of the institute of statistics.

“This fall in inflation would be due to the slowdown over one year in energy prices (…) of manufactured goods and services”, indicates INSEE in its report. On the government side, this disinflation is good news, as expressed by the Minister of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, Bruno Le Maire.

“This is the first time in several months that we have seen inflation slow down in France. […] There are a number of prices that will start to fall,” he noted at the microphone of France Inter on May 31, 2023.
