King Charles III will be crowned this Saturday, May 6, after a ceremony at Westminster Abbey, followed by a procession in the British capital. The coronation should be less impressive than that of his mother Elizabeth II, in 1953. King Charles having affirmed his desire to “modernize” the protocol. The event still required many preparations to settle all the details of a meticulous ceremony.

February 6, 2022 marked the start of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee for her 70-year reign. The same day, in one of her rare speeches, she announced that she “wants Camilla to become the next queen consort when [her] son becomes king”, and gave her blessing to the latter so that she could wear the title of Princess of Wales. These words had gone around the world and surprised Camilla, wife of Charles.

Eight months after these beautiful words, the Queen left us from Balmoral Castle on September 8th. It is only this Saturday, May 6, that the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will take place. Charles had yet ascended the throne immediately after the death of his mother and was officially proclaimed king two days later.

A particular reason explains the long delay between the proclamation and the coronation of the king. Preparations take a lot of effort. However, this period is shorter than that of Elizabeth II, in 1953. The latter had indeed been crowned 16 months after her proclamation, because of the deadline imposed after the death of her father and also the meticulousness of the preparations.

In order to test your knowledge of the new King Charles III, we offer you a quiz below! God save the King!
