In France, butter is omnipresent in our kitchens. Indeed, in 2019, Les Echos revealed that the French were very big consumers. With 8 kilograms per capita per year, France holds the record ahead of Germany. However, a drop in the purchase of this product was already noted in 2019. Indeed, according to the Iri firm, sales had fallen by almost 2.5%. Discover in our slideshow below the tips offered by La famille du lait to keep your butter longer.

One of the main reasons addressed by the polling institute was the drop in breakfast consumption in France. Indeed, “the French eat less breakfast and biscuits tend to replace sandwiches. Consumers also use other spreadable products such as Nutella or maple syrup”, specifies Pascale Hebel, director of the consumer division. at the Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions (Credoc).

Pascale Hebel nevertheless specifies that the consumption of butter is decreasing especially among children and students. It is often replaced by vegetable fats. This can be explained by an increase in butter prices from 2019. Moreover, with inflation, this product has continued to increase and is even one of the most inflationary foodstuffs. Whether first price or private label, butter is becoming a luxury product.

A few months ago, FranceInfo launched its basket made up of 37 products in collaboration with the NielsenIQ institute. The objective is to observe the growth of the prices of these items over one year. For butter, the result is surprising. Indeed, a 250 gram private label unsalted butter wafer is now at 2.20 euros. This represents an increase of almost 22.63%. In addition, the prices of these products continue to increase from month to month and the polling institute even announced a “red spring”.

Discover in our slideshow below the tips to keep this butter longer and save money.
