For the past few months, FranceInfo has been compiling a basket of 37 products whose price increase has been observed over a period of one year. If last month this franceinfo basket, produced in partnership with France Bleu, was 16.6% between February 2022 and February 2023, it broke new records in March. Indeed, the total price of the basket increases by 17.7% between March 2022 and March 2023.

The basket now stands at 106.25 euros in March. This inflation affects all products, but the price of some is increasing faster than others. Among the most expensive commodities since inflation, we find first-price sugar having increased by nearly 56%, but also private label rice reaching a 28% increase over one year. Find out in our slideshow below what it is about frozen foods.

Among the foods that have undergone a sharp increase in their price, we find frozen foods, the fresh section of the supermarket and animal products. Indeed, frozen is the department whose products increased the most in March 2023. The fresh department follows closely behind. “The prices of fresh produce have risen by an average of 16.5% over one year. Here, it is above all the rise in energy costs which is in question, to maintain the cold chain”, explains Théo Uhart for France Info.

Finally, last in the top 3, the animal section is one of the most inflationary this month. “Making animal food is very energy-intensive. And then in animal products, there is meat, cereals, and these products have increased a lot in 2022 and again at the beginning of 2023”, explains Emmanuel Fournet from NielsenIQ, partner of FranceInfo for these infographics.

Thus, food to feed your dog or cat has increased by 17.7% over one year. For animal litter, there is an increase of 12.4%. The frozen section therefore comes out on top this month with an overall increase of 20%, making it the most inflationary supermarket category over a year.
