The Canadians put up a tough and tough fight, but saw their title slip through their hands Sunday night in the final of the Women’s Worlds. They lost by the score of 6-3 against their great rivals, the Americans.
It all happened in the last five minutes. The 3-3 tie had persisted for about ten minutes when Brianne Jenner was sent off for tripping. A little over a minute later, Claire Thompson sent the puck into the stands in the defensive zone. The Americans thus benefited from a double numerical advantage. And they did not let slip this golden chance to finally seize the title, which belongs to the Canadians since 2021.
Captain Hilary Knight scored her 100th career World Championship point with a point shot. Seconds later, that same Knight deflected a shot from young sensation Caroline Harvey to complete her hat trick and make it 5-3.
Cayla Barnes scored the ultimate goal into an empty net.
Brianne Jenner scored twice in the loss, while Marie-Philip Poulin scored a goal and collected an assist.
