(Hilton-Head Island) Matt Fitzpatrick beat Jordan Spieth on the third overtime hole to win the Heritage Tournament on Sunday.

Fitzpatrick made a fine approach on the 18th hole of the Harbor Town course and scored his first win since his US Open triumph last June.

His 9-iron shot stopped a foot from the cup, setting the stage for a game-winning birdie.

Fitzpatrick resisted a couple of good finishing chances from Spieth, who was the defending champion, in the first two holes of overtime. Spieth’s putt on the 18th flag went around the hole while the one on the 17th just veered to the right.

Fitzpatrick was two shots behind Spieth with five holes to play, but birdied on the 15th and 16th holes to tie the game with an aggregate score of minus-17.

Leader after the third round, Fitzpatrick finished the final round with a card of 68 (-3) while Spieth went 66 for the second straight day.

Patrick Cantlay (68), who was in the same group as Fitzpatrick and Spieth, took the third echelon by virtue of a cumulative score of minus-16. Cantlay lost in overtime to Spieth last year.

Corey Conners completed the course in 72 strokes to be the highest-ranked Canadian in the tournament, tied for 31st place. His compatriots Nick Taylor (71) and Adam Svensson (70) tied for 41st.
