Vacations in Europe: do the French have a lot of vacation weeks?

More time to work, less time to enjoy? This was Yanick Jadot’s proposal in the race for the Elysée Palace, formulated a few months ago during an interview with the newspaper La Croix. The idea was that schoolchildren had far too many vacations: 16 weeks off, compared to 12 for our German neighbor. According to a map produced by BFMTV with data collected between 2020 and 2021 by Eurydice, a European network to support the field of education in Europe and the OECD, the average for European countries is between 14 and 15 weeks.

In France, the school holidays for the year 2022-2023 have been revealed. This year, the start of the school year will take place on Thursday, September 1, 2022. Then, the All Saints holidays will take place from October 22 to November 7. The Christmas holidays will take place from December 17, 2022 to January 3, 2023. Finally, the winter holidays 2023 will take place for two weeks, from February 4 to March 6 depending on the zone A, B or C where you live. Finally, spring break, in the same way, will take place over two weeks, between April 8 and May 9, depending on your zone.

The French seem to have a lot of holidays. This is due to the 8 weeks of vacation available to school children outside the summer holidays. At the same time, France is one of the countries with the fewest weeks of vacation in summer, with only 8 weeks of vacation compared to 11 in Spain or Sweden. Thus, France is below the average of 12 weeks of holidays for European countries.

12, 13, 14, here is the number of weeks of leave granted in European countries.
