The number of tourists has increased by 130% in 20 years. According to Ademe, this is explained by the abundance of low-cost offers and the arrival of new travelers from new countries: “we are traveling more often, over ever shorter periods, and to ever more distant destinations” , explains the agency. This is not without impact on certain regions of the globe, beset by “overtourism” (95% of tourists are concentrated in 5% of the world’s territories): “Congested streets, pollution, waste, overconsumption of water and energy , decline in the local quality of life, folklorization of culture, degradation of monuments…”.
