with his smash hit “Yéké yéké” internationally known West African singer Mory Kanté is dead. The Secretary-General of the Ministry of culture of his native Guinea, Fodéba Isto, confirmed the death of the musician. Kanté died therefore at the age of 70 years on Friday in a hospital in Guinea.

in The Southeast of the country-born musician had his first musical successes with the Rail Band of Bamako, and had early been inspired by his famous fellow musician Salif Kéita. Kanté was the beginning of the 80s, to France, and was there for the performances first successes. The international breakthrough came in 1988 with his catchy song “Yéké yéké”, which made the sounds of his homeland known to the world.
