This year, you could potentially throw a garden party for New Year’s Eve! Indeed, this New Year’s Day weekend could enter the annals of temperature records. Representative of general trends, the year 2022, on the way to becoming the hottest year since the beginning of reliable weather records in 1900, should end on yet another wave of mildness, as reported by La Chaîne Météo.

On New Year’s Eve, Saturday, December 31, temperatures will mirror Christmas Day, which clinched the title of second warmest Christmas since records began. This Saturday could even break records, not only in several regions of France, but also throughout Western Europe.

A “southern flow” is the source of these extreme temperatures for the season. This flow corresponds to a wind which will settle in front of the Atlantic disturbances, which are at the origin of the strong wind episodes of this second half of the week. It will bring mild air masses from the subtropical regions of the globe to the metropolitan territory, at temperatures of up to 13 degrees at an altitude of 1,500 meters in the south of France. Above the north of France, they would reach between 5°C and 10°C.

The difference with the average temperatures for the season is aberrant: we reach a positive difference of 5°C to 10°C. For the northern half of the territory, the cloud cover will be decisive for the equalization or the supplanting of the records. This Saturday, average temperatures throughout France will exceed seasonal averages by almost 8°C. Finally, the mildness should remain throughout the beginning of January, with a potential relapse of the thermometer during the second half of the month.
