Richard Pitino is going to be unemployed for less than 1 day.

Pitino, who had been fired by Minnesota on Monday night, is expected to be named the next head coach at New Mexico, sources told ESPN.

A formal announcement is expected shortly.

Pitino spent eight seasons in Minnesota, going to two NCAA tournaments. The Golden Gophers finished one match below .500 in each of the last two seasons, and dropped seven straight games to finish this past regular season, falling from NCAA championship competition.

Pitino would replace Paul Weir, who was fired after four seasons in Albuquerque. The Lobos have not made the NCAA tournament since 2014.
