Minister of foreign Affairs Mike Pompeo expressed his condolences via Twitter. “He was an extraordinarily gifted intelligence officers,” wrote Pompeo on Mendez. This was published after his retirement from the foreign intelligence service in 1990, several memoirs. In it Mendez also described his role in the rescue of six American diplomats from Tehran during the occupation of the Embassy in 1979. The diplomats had been spent as a canadian Film Crew and were able to flee.

Mendez was a “true American Hero,” wrote Affleck on Twitter. “He never sought the spotlight for his actions, he was simply trying to serve his country.”

in 1979, was occupied by Iranian students of the American Embassy in Tehran to protest against the admission of the deposed Shah Reza Pahlavi in the United States.
