The health crisis is far from ancient history. If France has removed the mask in all public and private places including public transport since Monday May 16, 2022, it could face a new epidemic wave in the coming weeks.

For the past few days, the various epidemiological indicators have started to rise again, as indicated by Covid Tracker:

According to epidemiologist Mircea Sofonea, “we are well at the start of a new wave which could last a month, a month and a half, so until mid-July”, as France Info reports.

In recent weeks, the French have returned to a “normal” life. With the lifting of health restrictions, their daily lives are no longer dictated by Covid-19 and little by little, we are seeing a relaxation of barrier gestures. This is one of the explanations for this epidemic recovery, but it is not the only one.

France is also facing two new Omicron sub-variants called BA.4 and BA.5 According to scientists, they are 10% more contagious than the Omicron BA.2 sub-variant, responsible for the epidemic recovery in April.

In Portugal and South Africa, where these two sub-variants are in the majority, “hospitalization figures have remained stable”, indicates France Info. It is therefore considered to be no more dangerous than BA.2.

For the time being, the return of health restrictions or a new dose of vaccine generalized to the entire population are not on the agenda.
