With the arrival of contactless payment a few years ago, payments by bank card are more and more numerous, to the detriment of other means of payment such as cash or checks. However, some French people still remain attached to banknotes.

In the country as well as in the whole of the euro zone, there are seven different types of banknotes: those of 5€, 10€, 20€, 50€, 100€, 200€ and 500€. If those of 500€ are no longer issued and doomed to disappear, the others should still have a bright future ahead of them.

Payment in cash is particularly appreciated by part of the population, who believe that it offers greater freedom of use, since it is less traceable.

There are still some regulations to govern this means of payment. Thus, according to the Banque de France, it is possible to pay professionals in cash up to €1000. This limit is subject to certain specific exceptions:

Similarly, in some special cases, there is no threshold. Indeed, if a person has no means of payment other than cash or does not have a bank account, the ceiling does not concern them.

In the case of a settlement between two individuals, there is also no threshold. However, it is advisable to keep a written record for payments over €1500, in order to be able to prove the payment.
