The former teams of Lance Armstrong , Johan Bruyneel, spoke with the journal belgian Smoke. The exciclista belgian, 55 years old reviewed names, situations and experiences in cycling, and , as always, are expressed with clarity. Bruyneel led the US Postal, Discovery Channel, Astana and RadioShack, and was punished for life by the role he played in Armstrong and doping on their structures.

“It’s very simple: all the champions in the history of cycling were the best of his generation -said Bruyneel to Smoke-. In the decade of 90, all had access to the same drugs: blood doping and EPO. Greg LeMond always says: ‘I’m the only winner clean’. Oh shit!. Always rode for French teams, and they were the kings of cortisone” .

do you Really imagine that LeMond never took anything? Has beaten Hinault and Fignon, who admitted to doping. You can’t beat the best in the world that have been doped without taking something yourself,” added Bruyneel. “But LeMond was the best of his generation, like Hinault, Anquetil, Merckx and Indurain. And also Lance”.

“The hypocrisy is what has hurt,” said Bruyneel. “When I listen to some former colleagues employed in the television , I think: ‘Do what you want, but don’t talk about doping'”.

“Look at the team managers Marc Madiot [Groupama-FDJ], Vincent Lavenu [AG2R La Mondiale] and Jean-René Bernaudeau [Total Direct Energie] -the big bosses of French cycling-. Continue juzgándome by my past, but what they have they have been forgiven, so to speak”.

Bruyneel told a story from his early days as a professional involved Madiot. “It was my first race abroad as a professional in the second year. I was completely wrung out between the support cars, but I did everything I could to finish that race. The doping control was performed by drawing lots, who announced half way through the radio of the race. Madiot came back to the team car, he heard that it wasn’t called [by doping], arremangó the sleeve and put a syringe in the upper part of the arm . That image has remained with me all my life. And those are the men that we are still condemning me and Lance”.

And added another example. “We apparently are the culprits of all the evils of cycling. But explain what is the difference between Bjarne Riis and me. We compete in the same time and there were no differences in terms of doping, I at least I did not have a hematocrit of 60. As athletic directors we also follow a similar trajectory.

I worked with Michele Ferrari, and he with Eufemiano Fuentes . There is only a legal difference. In the case of Riis, the anti-Doping Agency of Denmark to respect the prescription of the facts.”
